Area Rug Care & Maintenance

Keep your area rug looking and feeling its best for years with proper care and maintenance!

Caring for your area rug

Your area rug in an investment in your home like all your other furnishings. A good area rug care and maintenance routine will extend the useful life of your rug.

Vacuuming

Removing loose soil while it remains on the rug’s surface is important before it gets embedded into the pile. Vacuum areas often that receive the most traffic, such as hallways, stairs, and exterior entryways in the home. This helps eliminate tracked-in dirt and airborne dust. Ideally, vacuum your area rugs a minimum of once a week, and high-traffic areas more often. With pets you may need to vacuum rugs daily.

Deep cleaning

Daily vacuuming is the most important cleaning activity, but professional deep cleaning is necessary to remove stubborn or embedded soil. Have your area rug professionally cleaned every two to five years, or before soiling shows, which may be sooner. Professional cleaners use special equipment to remove trapped dirt from the rug’s foundation and to thoroughly dry the rug to prevent odors and mildew.

Spot cleaning

Stain-resist treatments on most area rugs will repel most acid-based dyes, but not all in foods and beverages. With prompt attention and patience, most common household spills can be removed. For successful spot removal, read the manufacturer’s warranty for your area rug.
