ABOUT AREA RUGS

We have the answers to your questions about area rugs, whether you're wondering about rug pads or aren't sure how to choose the right rug size.

Rug pads should be slightly smaller (by approximately one inch around the perimeter) than your rug. This allows the edge of the rug to fall flat to the floor, concealing the pad beneath. It’s best to order a pad either in the exact size as your rug or slightly larger so that you can trim it to fit.

To choose the proper rug size for your dining room, you'll need to measure the length and width of your dining table. Your area rug needs to be large enough to allow chairs to be pushed back from the table without falling off the rug. For side chairs and armchairs, allow 30″ on each side.

It is important (and beneficial) to have a rug pad. Rug pads provide a solid foundation for rugs and extend their lives. In addition to adding comfort and cushioning underfoot, a rug pad absorbs the impact of foot traffic, reducing the wear on the surface yarn. Rug pads also protect the bottom of your rug, along with the flooring beneath. Finally, most quality area rugs require a rug pad to maintain the manufacturer’s warranty.

You should have your area rug professionally cleaned every two to five years. Not all area rugs will withstand steam cleaning, however; some rugs may need to be professionally cleaned using other methods. Professional cleaners use special equipment to remove trapped dirt from the rug and are able to dry it thoroughly to prevent odors and mildew. Always take your rug to an experienced, knowledgeable rug cleaning professional.

If you have kids and pets, you’ll have accidents. Look for an area rug that’s easy to clean. Wool is a good fiber for combating daily mishaps, but many synthetic area rugs come with built-in stain resistance. Multi-colored or patterned rugs are better at hiding stains and dirt. When it comes to shedding pets, you may want to consider a rug that’s similar to your pet’s hair color. This will cut down on vacuuming time.
